La Fortuna is the working town; Arenal is the cone you came to see. Hotels sit in four different places that Google flattens into one search: downtown La Fortuna (walkable sodas, tour desks, no on-site thermal river), the volcano road west toward Tabacón and Nayara (views and private springs, a taxi for every dinner), El Castillo on the quieter south shoulder, and a handful of lake-side lodges toward Nuevo Arenal. The trip fails when you book a luxury spring resort and then complain about needing a car, or when you book a $50 town room and expect Tabacón water in the garden.

📅 Best Time to Visit

December–April is clearer for volcano views and higher rates. May–November is greener, cheaper, and still workable: mornings often open, rain after lunch, springs feel better in a downpour. Semana Santa and Christmas book out the road hotels first.

✈️ Getting There

From SJO: 3–3.5 hours by shuttle or rental car via San Carlos. From LIR: about 2.5 hours if you are combining with Guanacaste. From Monteverde: 3–4 hours by road or the lake taxi-boat-taxi. There is no airport in La Fortuna.

💰 Average Daily Budget

Town backpacker: $40–70/day. Mid-range volcano-road: $100–180/day. Luxury springs (Nayara, Tabacón, The Springs): $300–800+/night for the room alone. Day passes $45–120 if you sleep in town.
