Honduras is two trips sold as one country: a cheap colonial-and-ruins mainland (Copán Ruinas, La Ceiba, Pico Bonito) and a Caribbean island week on Roatán or Utila. San Pedro Sula (SAP) feeds Copán and the north coast; Roatán (RTB) skips the mainland entirely. This hub is the split — reef vs ruins — plus daily costs. Named hotels are only properties already listed here.

Best time (short version)

The useful dry window is February–May: clear roads to Copán, calmer Bay Island seas. November–December is a second, greener dry spell (book Christmas on Roatán early). June–October is wet; September–October are the heaviest and cheapest. Utila stays cheaper than Roatán year-round. Dive visibility is usually best March–June.

Budget snapshot (2026 planning ranges)

Mainland backpacker: about $25–40 a day (baleadas $0.60–1.20, rooms $10–20). Mid-range Copán or La Ceiba: $50–80. Roatán mid-range beach $60–140; luxury dive villas $200–600. Lempira planning rate is about L24–25 = $1; dollars work on the islands, Lempiras stretch further inland.

Where to stay first

Roatán if the trip is reef and you can fly RTB. Copán Ruinas if you want courtyards and the ruins a short walk or tuk-tuk away. Utila if the budget is a PADI course, not a west-end resort. Do not book “Honduras” as one hotel — the transfer from Copán to Roatán is a full travel day.
