El Salvador is the smallest map in the region: a morning at Punta Roca, an afternoon volcano, pupusas at night, and no bus over five hours. First nights usually land at San Óscar Arnulfo Romero (SAL), then split — El Tunco / El Zonte for surf, Suchitoto for cobblestones, or a capital night if the flight is late. This hub is that split plus daily costs. Hotel names are only properties already listed here.

Best time (short version)

Dry season is November–April. January–February is the clearest window for Ruta de las Flores and volcano hikes. Semana Santa fills El Tunco and Suchitoto — book early. May–October afternoons rain; that is also the more consistent swell season. September–October are wettest and cheapest. Coffee harvest in the highlands runs November–March.

Budget snapshot (2026 planning ranges)

Backpacker: about $25–40 a day (three pupusas $1–2.25, hostels $6–15). Mid-range surf-town hotel, restaurants, and Uber: $50–85. Luxury Bálsamo coast or San Salvador nights: $120–250+. The country uses the US dollar. Buses stay cheap because the map is short.

Where to stay first

El Tunco if you want a walkable surf town and Punta Roca nearby. Suchitoto if you want colonial streets and lake air. San Salvador only if the flight lands late or you need a weekday city base. Las Flores / the east coast if the trip is a point break, not nightlife. Do not book “the beach” until you know which break.
