What a Costa Rica trip actually is
Costa Rica is three different trips sold as one country: a volcano-and-hot-springs stay around La Fortuna, a short park-and-beach strip at Manuel Antonio, and a dry-season beach week in Guanacaste that usually flies into Liberia (LIR), not San José (SJO). Mixing all three in seven nights means more shuttle days than wildlife days.
The useful first decision is the airport and the first hotel, not a hotel brand. SJO feeds Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, and the Caribbean. LIR feeds Papagayo, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, and (with a long dirt-road transfer) Nosara. A two-week road trip can use both airports. A five-night beach week should not start in San José.
Pura vida is real as a pace, not as a price. Roads, parks, and English-speaking tour desks cost more than Guatemala or Nicaragua. What you buy is access: marked trails, drinkable tap water in most tourist towns, and a tourism industry that runs on schedule in high season.

Plan mid-range at $90–160 per person per day once a room, food, a bus or shuttle, and one paid activity are in. Backpackers using sodas, hostels, and public buses still land near $45–70. Luxury beach or eco-lodge days run $250–500+. Restaurant bills add 13% VAT plus a mandatory 10% service charge — the usual first-week surprise.
