Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
Tocumen International Airport is Panama's main international gateway and the largest hub in Central America. Located 24 kilometers east of Panama City, this modern airport serves as Copa Airlines' main hub, connecting North and South America. With over 16 million passengers annually, Tocumen is one of Latin America's most important aviation hubs.
The airport features two terminals (T1 and the new T2), extensive duty-free shopping, and efficient immigration processing for the millions of travelers passing through each year.
What to Expect Upon Arrival
Immigration Process
Panama's immigration is efficient and straightforward:
- Arrival at terminal - International flights arrive at T1 or T2
- Immigration line - Present passport and completed immigration card
- Baggage claim - Modern carousels with clear signage
- Customs declaration - Green lane for nothing to declare, red for items
Tip: Have your hotel address and return ticket information ready for immigration officers.
Visa Requirements
Panama has generous visa policies for tourists. Citizens from the US, Canada, EU, UK, Australia, and most Latin American countries receive 90-180 days upon arrival (depending on nationality). Requirements include:

Always confirm the fare before departing. Rates are fixed for airport taxis.
Uber and Rideshare

Metro and Bus

- Not recommended with heavy bags or late arrivals
Rental Cars
Major international and local rental agencies have airport counters:

Taking the Metro from Tocumen (checked October 31, 2026)
Airport operator (official): Tocumen's own transport page says the city connection runs "through Line 2 from the airport station". The station is reached by the free external shuttle, which leaves Terminal 1 from level 100, gate 2, and Terminal 2 from level 100, gate 18, every day from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. The same page says the Metro accepts Visa and Mastercard (Tocumen Airport: Metro, shuttle bus).
Press report (fares and hours): La Estrella de Panamá lists B/.0.50 on Line 2 and B/.0.35 on Line 1, payable with the rechargeable Metro card or a contactless Visa/Mastercard. Trains run Mon–Fri 5:00–23:00, Sat 5:00–22:00, and Sun and holidays 7:00–22:00 (La Estrella de Panamá, 9 Oct 2025). We did not find these fares on an official page, so check the ticket machine.
The shuttle-plus-train route suits a backpack. With two suitcases at rush hour, a taxi is easier. Panama uses the US dollar alongside the balboa (B/.1 = US$1), so you do not need to change money for the fare. Taxi and SIM prices change too often for us to print them; agree the fare before you get in.

Important: Allow 2+ hours between international arrival at Tocumen and domestic departure from Albrook.
